Weekly Commentary (Updated Oct. 12, 2023): With the news of SAG-AFTRA continuing to strike, the awards season remains in flux, with actors unable to campaign. However, the race continues.

This week’s column focuses on the two legendary filmmakers — Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg — competing against one another for only the second time in Oscar history. In addition, they could be nominated alongside one another for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.”

News from the last week that affected the rankings include Jon Batiste adding an original song to the mix for the documentary “American Symphony.” He’ll compete against staples such as Diane Warren and Billie Eilish.

Lionsgate is pushing “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” in the comedy categories for the Golden Globes.

Finally, with the saddest news for “Swifties” and “Beyhive” enthusiasts, the two concert films from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé will not be eligible for the Oscars documentary feature category.

Next on the festival circuit docket is the Middleburg Film Festival where contenders such as “American Fiction” and “Priscilla” will screen for patrons, along with tributes and honors bestowed upon directors Emerald Fennell (“Saltburn”), Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”) and George C. Wolfe (“Rustin”), in addition to composer Michael Giacchino (“Society of the Snow” and “Next Goal Wins”).

Most significant chart gains: “Killers of the Flower Moon” is currently predicted to be the most nominated film with 13, including a possible supporting actress nom for Cara Jade Myers, who gets a huge boost with Lily Gladstone moving to lead actress. Myers jumps to the No. 5 position. That has put two streamers — Apple and Netflix — at the current leaders for studios with 14 apiece, followed by Warner Bros and Universal Pictures.
